About this work

In this series the green is being present. It is the layers of small things in a day that disappear if you stop paying attention. The brown is addiction, and it cuts into the green with hard edges that you cannot help noticing.

What is different about this one is the small rectangles, and there are a lot of them. They are patches. Every addiction leaves holes. The mind fights, and sometimes it wins and sometimes it loses, but the holes were there either way. The patches are what comes after. They are an acceptance that something has changed, including how you look, and an acceptance of who you are now rather than who you were before.

Each patch is a separate piece of veneer, cut by hand and set into the surface, and the grain runs a different way inside every one of them. At 123 cm across it is the largest piece in the series.

There is a knot in every piece in this series, and it stands for the Gordian knot, because seeing a problem clearly is not the same thing as solving it, and sometimes the only way out is to cut.

Studio letter

New work, before it goes public

A few times a year I send out new pieces before anyone else sees them, along with exhibition dates and the occasional note from the workbench. Nothing more often than that, and you can leave whenever you like.
