About this work
Violet and vivid green, and inside them a set of shapes that keep almost turning into something you recognise. A diamond, a doorway, a slab of red burr set at an angle.
This piece is about the forms we know before we have words for them. Nothing in it represents anything, and yet people stand in front of it and start seeing faces and bodies in the grain, which is exactly what I hoped would happen.
I dye the veneer myself and the colour goes all the way through it rather than sitting on the surface, so the figure of the wood still reads through every field of colour.

New work, before it goes public
A few times a year I send out new pieces before anyone else sees them, along with exhibition dates and the occasional note from the workbench. Nothing more often than that, and you can leave whenever you like.
